Former chief of staff of armed forces says assassination attempt not the first

Presidential hopeful Sami Anan, former chief of staff of the armed forces, affirmed that his assassination attempt by unknown assailants was true and that he will give further details later.

Anan told the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Tuesday that the incident happened but he was not harmed. His security personnel recognized the terrorists who tried to assassinate him. He added that it was not the first time that these elements try to target him.

Verbal altercations erupted between Samir, son of the presidential hopeful Sami Anan, former chief of staff of the armed forces, and Major General Hani Abdel Latif, Interior Ministry spokesperson, over attempted assassination of Anan.

In a talk show on the privately-owned TV Tahrir channel, Samir said, “What was said by Sami Anan’s office over the assassination attempt is true. The Interior Ministry statement is hasty. It did not confirm the incident. We have information about the car. There is information that shouldn’t be given to media, as it relates to security services.”

Samir Anan attacked the political activist Mamdouh Hamza for describing the accident as a ‘media show’ in favor of the electoral publicity. He added that his father does not need a media show as Hamza said. He also indicated that Anan does not have enemies, but others are trying to create them.

Meanwhile, Abdel Latif said, “We did not receive any reports. Security services in Giza headed to Anan’s campaign headquarters and checked it through testimonies of eyewitnesses.”

“If they have any information, they should file official report so we investigate it. Our information assure that the accident is untrue,” he added.

Samir replied saying that an official statement was issued and that he will file official report in the following day.

“Interior Ministry was mistaken because it said that that these were claims. It should have indicated that there was no official report. We have the number of the car which will be given in the report,” he added.
