Free entry on International Museum Day: Ministry

Locals and visitors to Egypt alike will be allowed free entry to museums across the country on Wednesday as a marker of International Museum Day, an occasion that falls on May 18 of every year.

In a statement, the head of the Antiquities Ministry museums sector, Elham Salah, said granting free entry has been a tradition adopted by the ministry lately to encourage Egyptians to visit museums. It is hoped that this will help citizens apprehend their cultural heritage.

According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the number of museums in Egypt reached 66 in 2014. Around 4,262 people visited art and history museums in the same year, which raised LE 89,275 of revenue.
