Germans march in Cairo to promote tourism

A delegation of German tourists organized a march in Cairo on Wednesday aimed at encouraging German tourists to visit Egypt. The march was attended by both Egyptians and Germans, and was accompanied by the slogan "From Gutenburg to Tahrir… a peaceful protest".

Tamer Marzouq, head of an Egyptian tourism promotion agency in Germany, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the agency had organized the march in Tahrir Square to support tourism in post-revolution Egypt.

Marzouq said the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion is hosting 30 artists, athletes, celebrities and members of German media from 5 to 12 April, in coordination with Egypt's tourism sector.

The delegation will visit tourist and archaeological attractions in Cairo, Hurghada and Luxor. It will also visit Tahrir Square to express solidarity with the Egyptian revolution. The visit will be broadcast by media representatives accompanying the delegation.

The visit comes as the authority attempts to restore foreign tourism in Egypt, which has been hard hit by concerns for safety since the revolution that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak.

Germany sent the third-highest number of tourists to Egypt last year, and the number of Germans who visited increased 10.5 percent compared to 2009.
