Giza governor calls for relocation of Israeli Embassy

Giza Governor Ali Abdel Rahman called for the relocation of the Israeli Embassy to a less populated area after protesters staged a sit-in in front of the embassy after the killing of six Egyptian security personnel by an Israeli helicopter.

Traffic has been obstructed as a result of the protests in the vital area, located where Cairo and Giza meet, he said.

In statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Abdel Rahman said the repetitive sit-ins near the embassy have damaged cement barricades and fences, which means additional costs for the governorate.

He said he supports calls for the embassy to be relocated to somewhere that has lighter traffic, and he supports the right to peaceful protest.

Meanwhile, a group of young people launched an internet campaign to urge the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to speedily relocate the Israeli Embassy to the outskirts of Cairo.

The group issued a statement denouncing the embassy's proximity to certain key landmarks, such as the Nile, the Nahdet Misr Statue and Cairo University.

Its Facebook page gained around 500 members within an hour of its launch.
