Government to double food subsidies

An official source said the government plans to double subsidies of ration card commodities, amounting to LE26 billion this fiscal year.

The source said the decision was made in response to the global price increases of wheat, sugar and cooking oil.

The source also warned of a shortage of rice supplied for ration card purchase due to an exorbitant price hike on the local market. The cost of rice has reached LE4000 per ton and the General Authority for Supply Commodities is importing large quantities of the grain to offset a projected shortage in the coming two months.

The source also said ration card holders can only purchase half their cooking oil allocation because of a similar supply shortage.
