Gunmen attack North Sinai governor’s rest house

Unidentified gunmen attacked North Sinai governor’s rest house in Arish Thursdasy morning, injuring a soldier.

The soldier named Osama Abdel Gawad, 21, received a shot in his stomach. He was transferred to hospital and security forces began combing the area in search of the armed assailants.

Violence erupted in North Sinai following the dispersal of Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins in Cairo and Giza last July, in which army checkpoints have been the target of frequent attacks and drive-by shootings by militants.

The armed forces have since dedicated themselves to restoring security in a “war on terrorism” in the region. Though the army argues the Sinai operations have been precise, Egypt Independent reported in October that many North Sinai residents complain of indiscriminate attacks by the armed forces on their houses and even burning whole neighborhoods in what they call retaliatory action against the locals.
