The Ministry of Health and Population has announced that said that up until Saturday 8 February, 38 deaths have occurred as a result of the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as the swine flu.

The ministry added that another 318 cases of infection have been confirmed.

The statement reported the suspected cases of swine flu in Egypt numbered 339,483 since the beginning of December 2013, according to the statement. Out of these cases, 1,376 have been admitted to hospitals.

The statement pointed out that 80 percent of the deaths were for patients carrying one or more of the risk factors.

The Ministry of Health said it would issue a statement on Saturday and Tuesday of each week to announce the cases infected with swine flu.

The World Health Organization announced in 2010 that swine flu was among seasonal influenza viruses that would continue to spread at low levels and most likely becomes active in winter.

The statement called for caution among high-risk categories like pregnant women, children less than two years, elderly people over 65 years old, and people who suffer from respiratory diseases, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

It added the symptoms of swine flu included high fever, sore throat and cough. The categories mentioned above have to head immediately to the doctor once they suffer these symptoms, while other categories should consult doctors in no more than 48 hours, the statement read.
