As his first international tour, Tantawi to visit Libya on Monday

Egypt’s de facto leader Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi will visit Libya on Monday, marking his first international visit, state owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported on Saturday.

"Tantawi will visit Tripoli the day after tomorrow to open a new page with Libya," the newspaper said.

Tantawi will meet with the head of Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC), Mustafa Abdel Jalil, to discuss Egypt's participation in the reconstruction of its western neighbor, ravaged by an eight-month civil war that led to the killing of former leader Muammar Qadhafi, said Al-Ahram.

"Field Marshal Tantawi's visit underscores the importance of ties between the two countries," NTC deputy chief Abdel Hafiz Ghoga told Al-Ahram, adding he expected Libya's investments in Egypt to grow.

"They will also discuss the possibility of extraditing some members of the Qadhafi regime [staying in Egypt]," added Ghuqa.

In August, Egypt officially recognized the NTC as Libya’s legitimate government, paving the way for them to take over the Libyan embassy in Cairo and take their seat at the Arab League.

In November, Abdel Jalil met with Tantawi in Cairo, a move said to indicate the two countries' mutual desire to widen their cooperation following their respective revolutions.

Around 2 million Egyptians resided and worked in Libya during the rule of Qadhafi, and during the Libyan revolution more than 300,000 Egyptian workers fled.
