Outrage has erupted online after a video surfaced showing the fatal injection of a husky in Tanta.
This led many citizens in Gharbia and across Egypt to demand the dismissal of the director of the Veterinary Medicine Authority in Tanta, Hamdi Haggag.
They also called for an urgent investigation into the circumstances of the event, which has been described as the field execution of “an innocent creature.”
A veterinary campaign had gone to the village of Mahalla Marhoum following complaints from residents that three children had been bitten by the dog, resulting in varying degrees of injuries. The children were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Subsequently, the dog was caught after residents attempted to beat it and tied it to lampposts before the veterinary procedure of injecting the dog with a lethal injection was carried out.
Despite explanations from the authority’s director, who asserted that the injection was a “painkiller” at the request of the residents due to the dog’s deteriorating condition, the outrage on social media has not calmed.
Many comments on the video stated that the dog was in a condition that did not warrant subjecting it to further harm, and called for an investigation into the incident.
The Veterinary Medicine Authority defended the actions of the treatment team, insisting that the dog was given a pain-relieving injection to alleviate its suffering.
However, several rights organizations criticized the way the dog was handled, considering it a violation of ethical values in dealing with animals.
They demanded an independent investigation to determine the true nature of the substance injected into the dog and to verify that the procedures taken were legal.
