Islamist activist: Egypt uprising inspired by Iranian revolution

An Egyptian opposition activist said during a visit to Tehran that Egypt’s revolution had been inspired by Iran’s 1979 revolution.

During the visit, Magdi Hussein, secretary general of the Islamic-oriented Labor Party, met with Iran’s Chairman of the Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili and Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

In his meeting with Jalili, Hussein emphasized an intention to reinforce Egypt’s relations with Iran. He also said that Egypt's political groups will maintain unity and vigilance to fully accomplish the goals of the 25 January revolution.

"The USA should be ashamed and apologize to Egyptians rather than interfere in their internal affairs,” Hussein said. "The destiny awaiting dictators in the region will inevitably reach their citizens.”

Hussein, a longtime opponent of former president Hosni Mubarak’s regime, said he intends to run for president.

Hussein’s Labor Party was banned before Egypt's revolution.

Earlier this month, Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Nabil al-Arabi said Egypt was ready to turn a new page in its relations with Iran, which have been tense for more than 30 years.

But a ministry spokesperson said on Sunday that Gulf states’ fears of a rapprochement between the countries is “unjustified.”
