Judges Club to hold emergency meeting to discuss constitution

The Judges Club’s board of directors, headed by Judge Ahmed al-Zand, called for an emergency general assembly for Thursday evening to discuss the constitution draft, particularly the chapter on the judiciary.

Abdallah Fathi, deputy head of the Judges Club, said, “All the articles that have been presented to us, in all drafts, violate the independence of the judiciary.”

Fathi told Al-Masri Al-Youm that the judges requested the emergency general assembly because of their “severe anger” over the constitution.

The judges have already expressed their views in correspondence to the Constituent Assembly, according to Fathi, and in meetings with the Governing System Committee within the assembly, “but it was in vain.”

The General Assembly, Fathi said, will discuss the next draft of the constitution, and the judiciary’s position in it, as well as the “vicious attack against the judiciary from several entities.”
