Kuwait crown prince dissolves parliament, calls for elections

The Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, announced the dissolution of the National Assembly, and called for holding general elections in accordance with constitutional and legal controls.

“We have decided to dissolve the National Assembly and call for general elections… The people themselves will have the final word in rectifying the political scene by selecting those who properly represent them,” Al-Sabah said in his speech to the Kuwaiti people on Wednesday.

He added: “Accordingly, we have decided, compelled by the will of the people and in respect of their will, to resort to the constitution, the covenant that we have accepted, and based on our constitutional right stipulated in Article 107 of the Constitution, to dissolve the National Assembly as a constitutional solution, and to call for general elections in accordance with constitutional and legal controls.”
