Libya frees 52 Egyptian fishermen detained for illegal fishing

Libyan authorities released 52 Egyptian fishermen detained since 9 January for illegally fishing at its territorial waters, Assistant Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdel Hakam told reporters on Monday.

The sailors were freed without bail or a trial, he said.

Abdel Hakam added that the ministry's discussions with Egypt's consulate in Benghazi led to the release. He voiced appreciation for the Libyan authorities, saying their response reflects the distinguished ties between both countries.

Abdel Hakam pointed that the three fishing boats are expected to leave Libya on Sunday. He also urged fishermen to respect international treaties that ban trespassing in territorial waters.
