US-Iran negotiations reach a critical turning point and decisive phase: Egyptian Foreign Ministry

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that negotiations between the United States and Iran have reached a delicate turning point and a decisive phase, noting positive indicators and cautious optimism regarding the possibility of reaching an agreement in the near future.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that recent days have seen intensive diplomatic movements by various regional partners aimed at bridging the remaining gaps. He expressed Egypt’s hope that these efforts will soon yield an agreement that addresses the concerns of all participating parties.

Speaking to a local television network, the spokesperson added that consultations over the past 48 hours—while not delving into the specific details of the potential agreement at this time—reflect a momentum moving in the right direction to support the negotiating track.

Keeping the region safe from escalation

Khallaf emphasized that since the onset of the crisis, which is now approaching the three-month mark, Egypt has maintained a steadfast position advocating for diplomatic and negotiated solutions to defuse tensions and protect the region from the risks of military escalation.

He noted that Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has held extensive communications with a number of regional counterparts, particularly in Pakistan, Turkey, and Qatar, as part of coordinated efforts to contain the crisis and reach consensus-based frameworks.

The “Islamabad Declaration” and next steps

High-level sources previously revealed that the potential preliminary agreement between Iran and the United States may be titled the “Islamabad Declaration,” with Pakistan expected to officially announce the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The next round of talks is anticipated to take place on June 5th, at which point both Washington and Tehran are expected to dispatch their respective heads of delegation to negotiate the final terms of the text.

These developments come on the heels of multiple rounds of direct and indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding the Iranian nuclear file and regional security issues, conducted under both international and regional auspices.

Egypt remains committed to playing an active diplomatic role in de-escalation, driven by its firm conviction that any military escalation would have catastrophic repercussions on the security and stability of the entire region, particularly the Gulf States and Egyptian national security.
