Long-awaited laws for church construction close: minister

Egypt could soon have a law that regulates church constructions, a minister has revealed.

Legal Affairs Minister Magdy El-Agati said, while meeting with Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II on Friday, that his ministry is ratcheting up efforts to finalize the draft “as soon as possible”.

Agati said the law would be issued in line with Article No.253, which literally obliges the new Parliament to implement a law that regulates the construction of churches to ensure free worship for Christians.

The construction of churches, as well as church renovations, have been thorny issues that have led to occasional sectarian encounters over the past few years following the 2011 uprising.
