Man hangs himself for failing to find a job

A young man who hails from the Mediterranean city of Alexandria committed suicide after failing to find a job, state-run Al-Ahram newspaper's website reported on Sunday.

Al-Ahram added that Ahmed Rashed, 22, was found lying on his bed, fully clothed, with redness around his neck and a rope hanging from the ceiling.

“My son was depressed because he could not find a job,” said his father, 55-year-old Fathy Rashed.

Last year, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), said that Egypt's high unemployment rate and deteriorating economic conditions are the main causes of suicide in the country.

The number of suicides has increased significantly in recent years — it jumped from 1,160 cases in 2005 to 2,355 in 2006 and 3,700 in 2007. In 2009, an estimated 5,000 Egyptians killed themselves, according to CAPMAS.
