Mansoura Muslim Brotherhood prisoners start hunger strike

The defense team for imprisoned Muslim Brotherhood members in Mansoura Public Prison announced Monday that all its prisoners are on hunger strike to protest the prison administration's mistreatment of ill prisoners.

The lawyers said prison authorities refuse to treat ill prisoners, which has led to the death of three.

The prison administration refused to let prisoner Mohamed Abu Ouf, 43, out of prison to undergo surgery for appendicitis, which caused his death on Friday. Ouf's death is the third case due to negligence, according to the defence's statement.

The statement said that 25 prisoners are threatened with death due to medical negligence by prison authorities.

Security sources in Mansoura meanwhile denied that prisoners were on hunger strike and stressed that the prison authorities follow up on cases that need medical attention and sends them to hospitals regularly.

The forensic report said Ouf received treatment regularly, but he died as a result of his condition, the sources added.
