Martyrs’ families continue sit-in in Suez

Relatives of the martyrs who were killed during the 25 January revolution continued their sit-in for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday outside of the Suez Security Directorate and the governorate building in Arbaeen Square. The protesters are demonstrating against the release of those suspected of killing protesters on bail, since their trials have been postponed until September.

The protesters threatened to extend the protests, which are being organized by a number of political movements and youth coalitions, into Friday and until their demands for retribution against the accused officers are realized.

Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of angry protesters pelted the security directorate with stones and Molotov cocktails, injuring three policemen, and smashed in the windshields of five police cars. The police threw stones back at the protesters from inside the building.

The military later arrived to clear the area, using tanks to impose a security cordon around the security directorate, the governate building and all police stations in order to keep the protesters out.

Ali Geneidy, the father of one of the killed protesters, denied that the protesters had anything to do with the vandalism and riots taking place outside the security directorate and the court house complex.
