Military orders investigation of civilian death during drug ambush

Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) on Tuesday said it would investigate the death of an engineer who is said to have died during a fight between military police and drug smugglers.

On its Facebook page, the SCAF said it believes in continuous communication with Egyptians and ordered an immediate investigation of the incident.

According to local news reports, Egyptian engineer Rami Fakhry, 27, was on his way to work at an oil rig located on a Suez road. He then came upon a military group staging an ambush to arrest drug smugglers.

Fakhry reportedly retreated to the side of the road when he heard gunshots.

The SCAF also said it was pursuing what it believed were attempts on satellite television channels to ignite sectarian strife by depicting the military council as biased.
