Ministry sources: NGOs received LE1.7 bn in foreign funds since June 2010

Civil society organizations and some famous Egyptian figures have allegedly received a total of LE1.7 billion in foreign funds between June 2010 and early December, sources with access to Justice Ministry investigations said.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that some organizations received this money through legitimate channels while in other cases the state was not informed of the funding.

The sources allege that an organization that provides care for minors has received considerable funding from a European country. Salafi and Sufi groups have also purportedly received money from Arab countries.

So far, no Egyptians have been summoned for questioning; however, five American officials have been questioned and released pending further investigations, the sources said.

The ministry should announce the results of the investigations within days.
