Minor earthquake shakes Helwan

A minor earthquake shook Helwan on Tuesday, according to Egypt's National Earthquake Network of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysical Research.

Institute chief Hatem Ouda told state-owned news agency MENA that the earthquake, which measured 3.7 on the Richter scale, occured at 5:59 pm. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 13 to 14 kilometers south of Sudan.

Even though the earthquake was relatively small, Ouda said, most local residents felt it.

The area has no history of earthquakes and so institute researchers will set about finding why one occured there.
