MOPCO entitled to expansion despite environmental risks, court rules

A Damietta court ruled on Monday to allow Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) to expand two of the company's plants, MOPCO 1 and 2.

The court also canceled a previous verdict rejecting the appeal of MOPCO against the decision of former Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri, to start running another plant, MOPCO 3, and stop the expansion of the other two.

The court's ruling allows for renewed expansion after more than three years of conflict between the company and residents of a nearby village, Snaniyah.

Locals objected to expansions on the grounds of environmental risks, which could also put residents' lives at risk, they claim.
