Morsy to meet Haniyeh on Thursday

President Mohamed Morsy will meet Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of the Gaza Strip, on Thursday, said presidential spokesperson Yasser Ali on Wednesday.

Morsy has spoken with key political figures from Palestine over the past week, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Khaled Mashaal, the head of the Hamas political bureau.

Abbas and Mashaal have been waiting for these meetings since late June, said Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of political faction Fatah’s central committee.

On Sunday, Hamas political bureau member Mahmoud al-Zahar said that Egypt intends to send two delegations to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank to discuss Palestinian reconciliation.

Discussions between Morsy and the Palestinian officials centered on how to end the siege of the Palestinians in Gaza, such as by relaxing visa regulations for Palestinians to get into Egypt, Ali added

Ali denied that Egypt had allowed Palestinians to enter Egypt without showing visas.

This week, the German news agency DPA and the American Associated Press had claimed that, according to airport sources, Egyptian authorities would adopt a new policy as of Monday morning that would grant Palestinians visa-free entry to Egypt as well as new security measures at all of the country’s entrances.
