Mubarak meets with US envoy to discuss US-brokered peace efforts

President Hosni Mubarak and US Envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, on Wednesday convened in Cairo to discuss US efforts to revitalize the peace process.

Mubarak and Mitchell also addressed international mechanisms to establish an independent Palestinian state.

The meeting was attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman, US deputy envoy for the Middle East David Hill and US Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mubarak met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to hash out the next steps in the peace process in light of Israel's insistence on settlement construction in occupied territory.
