Name of South Sudanese state to be declared soon, says official

The name of the new South Sudanese state will be announced soon, said the representative of the Government of Southern Sudan in Egypt, Fermina Mawketh Manar.

All of South Sudan’s citizens in Egypt are extremely happy about secession, he added. "Those of them who would like to go back to the new state may do so and for those who would like to stay in Egypt to continue their education, Egypt is their second home."

Al-Masry Al-Youm had received news that the new state’s rumored name–"The Republic of the Nile"–has raised some tension between Cairo and Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

Sudanese sources revealed that Egypt categorically rejected the reference to the Nile River as a possible name for the new state.

Insisting that South Sudanese will not be deported to South Sudan, Manar said, "We do not want to deport anyone; they will spontaneously go back."

Manar described the relationship between Egyptian and Sudanese people as "age-old," adding that it will grow even stronger after the establishment of the new state.

Manar said the office of the Government of South Sudan in Cairo will become an embassy for South Sudan.
