NCHR denied prison visits

The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) criticized the Interior Ministry for not allowing it to visit Abdallah al-Shami and Mohamed Sultan who are detained in Tora prison.

The NCHR had on 27 May requested to visit them to check their health condition as they are on hunger strike.

It said in a statement that the prosecutor general approved the request the next day and notified the Prisons Department, which has not yet answered.

Under the law of its establishment, the council has the right to follow the human rights situation in Egypt, inspect conditions in Egyptian prisons and announce the results of such visits to the public and to the competent authorities.
