New strategy to protect ozone

The Ministry of Environmental Affairs has finalized a new “national strategy” to combat the use of ozone-depleting materials in the industrial sector. The plan will instead encourage eco-friendly alternatives.

Ministry officials say they are careful to avoid causing any damage to Egypt’s economy and industry and that their recommendations for alternative substances are in line with the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, an international treaty launched in 1989.

They stressed Egypt’s commitment to reducing the usage of harmful substances, in compliance with the protocol, and noted that many industries have already replaced ozone-depleting materials with eco-friendly substitutes.

Ozone-depleting substances (hydro-chlorofluorocarbons) are among the most important materials used in several industries, such as thermal insulation and foam manufacturing.
