Palestinian man killed in tunnel collapse

A young Palestinian man was killed early Tuesday morning when a tunnel collapsed at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

Civil security rescue teams dug out the body of Ahmed Rabie, 29, hours after the tunnel collapse, said spokesperson for the Higher Commission for First Aid and Emergency Adham Abu Silmiah.

The body was transferred to Abu Youssef Hospital in Rafah, added Abu Silmiah.

Many Palestinians are killed and hundreds are injured due to accidents related to tunnel collapses.

About 170 Palestinians have been killed in such accidents since February 2006, as many Palestinians work in trafficking goods to the beseiged Gaza Strip.

Smuggling basic goods from Egypt to Gaza became common when Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007. Palestinians use tunnels to smuggle food, medicine and fuel into the strip.

In June 2010, Israel eased its siege on Gaza, but it still does not allow Gaza to import building materials and other goods, which are usually smuggled through the tunnels.
