Palestinian president Abbas meets Egypt’s intelligence chief

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, currently in Cairo, held a meeting late Saturday with Egypt's intelligence chief Mohamed al-Tohami, official Palestinian Wafa news agency said.

The talks touched on the situation in the Palestinian territories, Israeli settlement building in Al-Quds (occupied Jerusalem) and the West Bank and Palestinian reconciliation talks, the agency said.

During the meeting, Abbas lauded the Egyptian efforts to bring divisions among Palestinian factions to an end.

The Palestinian leader arrived in Cairo on Saturday on a three-day visit, during which he is expected to meet with interim President Adly Mansour, Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi.

Abbas is also expected to meet with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi and Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb.

The Egyptian government has not made any statements yet about the meeting between Abbas and Al-Tohami.

Abbas is due to brief the Egyptian officials on developments in the Palestinian territories, Israeli violations in al-Quds and al-Aqsa Mosque and the outcome of his recent talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry, according to Palestinian ambassador in Cairo Barakat al-Farra earlier.

Palestinians and Israel resumed their direct peace talks in July after a three-year hiatus.

Talks between the two sides generally take place behind closed doors, with results of negotiations seldom divulged to the media.
