The Wafd Party will not take part in the 24 August demonstrations against the Muslim Brotherhood, said party head Al-Sayed al-Badawy on Thursday during a conference honoring former party leaders in Gharbiya.
Badawy called the demonstrations anti-democratic, adding that President Mohamed Morsy came to power through free elections. The people chose the president and any changes to that have to come through the ballot box, he continued.
Former MPs Mohamed Abou Hamed and Mostafa Bakry, as well as media host Tawfiq Okasha, have called for anti-Morsy and anti-Brotherhood protests outside the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarter in Moqattam and in front of the presidential palace in Heliopolis next week.
Jama'a al-Islamiya also denounced the protest in a statement today, saying that those who resort to violence or vandalism during the demonstrations must be held accountable.
The group added that the demonstrations could lead to destabilizing violence and sink the country into a level of chaos similar to Syria.
However, Jama’a al-Islamiya added that they respect the right to demonstrate within the parameters of the law.
