PM: Any action concerning Mubarak’s wealth is army’s responsibility

Any investigation of former President Hosni Mubarak's personal fortune is the responsibility of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, not the government, said Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq in press conference on Saturday.

Shafiq, formerly minister of aviation and an air force commander, is known to be a close friend of the Mubarak family, whose net worth has been estimated at between US$40-70 billion in recent international press reports.

On Friday, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to call for the replacement of Shafiq's government due to its affiliation with the Mubarak regime. On Saturday Shafiq vowed to reshuffle it, saying the results will be be declared this week and NDP figures will not feature.

Regarding election dates, Shafiq said that parliamentary elections will be held before presidential elections.

In the same conference, he announced that the country's remaining political prisoners number 487 and that the government will release dozens of them soon.

He added that the government is considering releasing about five people detained during the 25 January revolution, as well as the commutation of sentences for prisoners who failed to take advantage of the opportunity to escape during that period.

Shafiq said he is exerting substantial effort to locate people reported missing since 25 January.
