PM sets new minimum wage for governmentt employees at LE1200

Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy said that the government has decided to set the minimum wage for government sector workers at LE1200 per month. He added that the new minimum wage will be implemented beginning in January.

The Prime Minister had recently said that the current minimum wage, LE730 per month, would not be raised due to budget constraints. His statements provoked criticism from a number of politicians.

In a press conference following a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Beblawy said minimum wage in the private sector is still subject to negotiations with representatives of trade unions, adding that a final decision concerning the issue will be made next week.

"We discussed the status of advisors at government agencies and made a decision to limit their numbers and the remunerations they receive," he said.
