Police forcibly end Tahrir sit-in following ‘Reclamation of Revolution’ rally

Central Security forces on Saturday morning forcibly ended a sit-in staged by dozens of activists in Tahrir following a mass rally on Friday.

The police intensified its presence in Tahrir Square to prevent protesters from returning.

Eye witnesses told Al-Masry Al-Youm that police forces drove dozens of protesters out of a garden in Tahrir where they staged their sit-in. Police chased other protesters in surrounding streets.

The protesters are calling for a timeline for transferring power to a civilian authority, amending election laws and abolishing the Emergency Law.

Around 15 protesters were injured on Friday in clashes close to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) headquarters. Another 10 protesters were arrested.

On Friday, hundreds of protesters marched from Tahrir in downtown Cairo to SCAF headquarters. However, military police prevented them from advancing close to the building.

Eye witnesses said some protesters pelted police forces with stones and that people in civilian clothing threw stones back at them.

MENA reported that protesters from Heliopolis also marched toward SCAF headquarters to declare their support for the ruling military council, but were stopped by police.
