Police protest for higher pay, restoration of jobs

Hundreds of policemen protested Monday in Cairo's Tahrir Square and in front of the Ministry of Interior's headquarters nearby to demand better pay and their jobs back.

The protesters said their salaries are still low even though Minister of Interior Mahmoud Wagdi had decided to double their bonuses. They also demanded other changes to the system of compensation.

Some said they had been arbitrarily dismissed from service.

Military police cordoned off the protesters and diverted traffic as workers in the area were due to head home.

A security source, meanwhile, said some protesters had been dismissed by court order and will therefore not get their jobs back. The Interior Minister will look at the protesters' demands and respond in accordance with the law, the source added.
