Police stop 21 African migrants from entering Israel from Sinai

Egyptian police on Monday foiled an attempt by 21 African migrants to cross the border into Israel south of the Rafah border crossing, security sources said.

The group consisted of nine Eritreans, eight Sudanese and four Ethiopians.

The same sources said that two of the Eritreans had been shot by police after refusing to comply with orders to turn back from the border. They were subsequently taken to the Central Rafah Hospital for treatment.

Since the beginning of this year, Egyptian police have killed 23 Africans attempting to illegally cross the border into Israel.

According to Israeli sources, some 20,000 African migrants have entered the Hebrew state from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula since 2007.
