Police thwart illegal excavation of artifacts in Aswan

Tourism police in Aswan said they thwarted an illegal attempt by a citizen to dig for antiquities beneath a house near the Ancient Egyptian Edfu Temple on Saturday.
A stone bearing inscriptions, as well as a Pharaonic lamp, were already in the possession of the 60-year-old fortune hunter upon his arrest, police said.
Excavations by fortune hunters have been on the rise since the 2011 uprising. Many ancient archaeological sites have since been looted.
