Policeman injured in IED blast south of Cairo

A police sergeant was wounded early Friday when an IED planted by unknown perpetrators went off in Helwan, south of Cairo.

Bomb squads and civil defense forces cordoned the area off and the police officer was hospitalized.

Egypt has witnessed a series of bombings and attacks targeting public utilities and security forces since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The government blames Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which it designates as a terrorist group, for masterminding the recurrent attacks.
