Port Said signs multi-million pound agreement to develop slums

Agreements for an LE107 million slum development project in Port Said Governorate were signed on Thursday.

The governorate signed the agreements with the Slum Development Fund within the framework of the state’s proposed plan to develop slums across the country.

The project would create 1,200 new housing units in the Qaboty area within 18 months, at an estimated cost of LE95 million. About 4,680 people live in Qaboty.

A range of social economic programs would also be implemented, at an estimated cost of LE2.3 million. Main target areas of the programs include improving the quality of health care for women, issuing national ID cards, youth employment, vocational training and literacy training.

The plan also accounts for the creation of a 176-unit used furniture market.

Prime Minister Hesham Qandil and the ministers of housing, local development and finance were witnesses to the signing ceremony.
