Presidential election date yet to be set, says military

It has not yet been decided when Egypt's presidential election will be held, a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) confirmed on Monday.

At a press conference, Major General Mamdouh Shahin said the constitutional declaration will be issued within a maximum of two days and that parliamentary elections will be conducted in September, as previously announced.

When it assumed power following the resignation of former President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February, the SCAF announced it would conduct parliamentary and presidential elections within six months to hand over power to an elected government.

News reports during the past few days claimed that presidential elections would be delayed until June 2012, but the SCAF denied this on its official Facebook page Sunday.

Several political powers urged the postponement of the presidential and parliamentary polls until an entirely new constitution is formulated. The constitutional declaration will incorporate the package of amended articles accepted in a public referendum on 19 March, as well as other articles to govern Egypt until a new constitution is drawn up.
