Pro-Morsy students continue campus protests

Dozens of students loyal to former president Mohamed Morsy and his Muslim Brotherhood protested Wednesday inside Cairo University demanding the reinstatement of sacked colleagues and the release of others detained over protest-related charges.

A number of the protesters shot off fireworks during their demonstrations.

Private security agents intensified their deployment and heightened searches at the university’s gates. Police forces also deployed outside the university’s main gate.

In Alexandria University, students staged protests denouncing the killing of 21 Egyptians by the Islamic State in Libya. Security closed the university’s gates to prevent the demonstrations from moving out to the street.

Egyptian universities have been swept with sometimes violent protests by pro-Morsy students since the former leader was ousted in 2013. Several students have been jailed for breaking the protest law and assaulting security forces, while a number of them were referred to military courts.
