Prosecution refers 57 Azhar riot suspects to court

Prosecution decided on Wednesday to refer 57 supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsy to the Criminal Court. They are being accused of rioting in front of Mashyakhat Al-Azhar (office of Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb) and Qubba Palace.

Azhar University students and Morsy supporters gathered before the office last week after other students affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood broke into the university’s administrative building. They broke off granite and stones from Azhar Tunnel, the parking lot and Qubba Palace and hurled them at the office and university building. They also tried to break into the buildings, all the while insulting Tayyeb and security personnel.

Azhar University has seen a series of protests by Morsy supporters who condem his trial and are calling for his reinstatement.
