Protesters call for new, nation-wide demonstration Tuesday

Young Egyptian protesters called for a new demonstration on Tuesday to consolidate myriad demands made protesters during the past six days.

"The demonstration, which will be conducted from multiple parts of Egypt, will celebrate the first day of our uprising. The slogan of the day will be 'people want to prosecute the president,'" read a statement handed to Al-Masry Al-Youm by one of the protests' mobilizers.

On Tuesday, thousands took to the streets of Cairo, raising the slogan of "people want the regime to fall." Following three days of clashes with the police, security forces retreated, while elements of the army deployed to maintain order.

President Hosni Mubarak announced the dismissal of the current cabinet and its replacement by a new one to be headed by Aviation Minister Ahmad Shafiq as the new prime minister in replacement of former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif. Mubarak appointed Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman to fill a new position of vice-president.

But the protesters, who continue to fill the streets, remain unsatisfied with the changes.

"The army's presence now is becoming another form of power to replace the police. It shouldn't stop us from protesting," said Naser Abdel Hamed, an activist who has been part of the campaign to support reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei.

Protesters demanded on Tuesday that those who cannot take to the streets go on strike.

They endorse the efforts of popular committees to restore order, after looting spread across the nation in recent days.
