Relatives of Egyptians detained in UAE seriously injured during vigil

Street vendors attacked relatives of Egyptians detained in the United Arab Emirates while they held a vigil in Tahrir Square outside the Arab League headquarters, leaving 15 people seriously injured.

The vendors attacked the protesters with sticks and swords, as the protesters held the demonstration to request that the Arab League help release their relatives.

UAE security forces last week arrested 11 Egyptians, saying they are linked to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, which recruited members in the wealthy Gulf state.

An Emirati newspaper reported Saturday that the UAE rejected a request by Egypt to free the detainees after Cairo sent a presidential aide and intelligence chief General Mohamed Shehata to the UAE for talks.
