Report estimates drug abuse in Egypt at 7 percent

A new report prepared by the CBC Channel has revealed that 31,000 drug cases have been recorded by the police in 2012, compared to 50,000 cases in 2010.

According to official statistics drug abuse among Egyptians is 7 percent. The International Narcotics Control Board, meanwhile, esitmated global rates of drug abuse at 5 percent, the report said.

The largest heroin consumption rate in North Africa was recorded in Egypt as it consumes between 50 to 100 kg a year. Egypt also is the second largest country in Africa in terms of cannabis plant seizures, the CBC reported.

The report attributed the high statistics of drug circulation in Egypt to loose security mesures, and unemployment.
