Ring road accident leaves 11 dead

Eleven people were killed and three injured when a microbus and a truck collided in the early hours of Saturday on the ring road in 6th of October City, a security source said.

The truck driver lost control of the steering wheel, skidded out of his lane and crashed into a microbus on the other side of the road. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, the source added.

Traffic accidents are the second greatest cause of death in Egypt. The average rate of traffic deaths stands at 30 per day, according to experts, while a recently-released government report found that on average 18 Egyptians died daily during 2009.

Bad road conditions, poor enforcement of traffic regulations, and drug-taking drivers are blamed for the high rate of road deaths.
