Ruling military council invites citizens to celebrate October victory

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) on Wednesday invited the Egyptian public to celebrate the 38th anniversary of the October War in Tahrir Square, at the Unknown Soldier’s Monument in Nasr City, and in other public spaces. The anniversary celebrates Egypt's military victories against Israel during the 1973 October War.

A number of political parties and movements had called for a million-strong protest on Friday, 7 October, in Tahrir Square to demand a timetable for handing over power from SCAF to an elected civilian authority. They also announced their opposition to the contents of the SCAF statement issued on Saturday. The statement followed meetings between the council and political party chairmen.

Activists said the statement did not even address the minimum demands of political movements and parties and did not include promises to apply the Treachery Law or lift the Emergency Law.

On its Facebook page, the SCAF invited the Egyptian public to join the armed forces “in the celebrations that will take place on 6 October.”
