SCAF member: We will hand over power by June even if Constitution is not ready

Major General Mamdouh Shahin, member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said on Wednesday that the military would hand over power to an elected president at the end of June, even if the constituent assembly had not completed the new constitution by then.

“Neither we nor anyone else can interfere in the assembly’s work,” he added at the second meeting of the assembly, of which he is a member.

The meeting was to discuss the withdrawal of more than twenty members from the assembly.

Al-Azhar and the Coptic Church, as well as liberal parties and public figures withdrew, from the assembly to protest the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party dominating the formation of the assembly.

The assembly is comprised of 100 members chosen by the People's Assembly and the Shura Council. Islamists make up more than 70 percent of Parliament.
