SCAF to respond to Advisory Council suggestions on Thursday

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is expected to respond on Thursday to proposals it received Tuesday morning from Advisory Council Chairman Mansour Hassan, Advisory Council members have said. The proposals include moves to shorten the transition phase.

Advisory Council sources said the SCAF would meet with the council after it issues the response.

One Advisory Council member, who requested anonymity, said there were indications that the SCAF would approve the Advisory Council’s proposals to shorten some parts of the transition phase. He added that the actual handover of power “won't be accelerated and will take place at the end of June."

The source denied rumors that presidential hopefuls could obtain official nominations in March, or that the transfer of power would be pushed up to mid-May.

He said that registration of presidential candidates will begin after the constituent assembly begins its work, but that “the actual elections will take place a week after results of the referendum on the new constitution are announced."

Advisory Council member and presidential hopeful Amr Moussa said he suggested moving up presidential elections "in response to demands of protesters, who were calling for a president before a constitution."
