Stadiums to be ready for Africa Cup of Nations by end of May

The Supreme Committee of the Africa Cup of Nations under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly is racing time to complete the development of stadiums ahead of the tournament scheduled to take place in Egypt between June 21 to July 19, 2019.

The majority of the stadiums are close to finished. The Cairo Stadium will witness the opening and closing ceremonies.

Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy said he was following up on preparations at the stadiums that will host the Africa Cup of Nations, namely the Cairo, Air Defense, Alexandria, Suez, and Ismailia stadiums. He added that the development process includes the entrances and exits of the stadiums and the paths where masses will walk through as well as the development of facilities, seating areas, playground, floor and display screens.

Sobhy stressed that all development work will close during the month of May so that pilot operations can be conducted in the stadiums before the start of the tournament in June.

Ali Darwish, executive director of the Cairo Stadium Authority, also stressed that Cairo Stadium would be ready at the beginning of June. He said in an earlier statement that the Cairo Stadium’s official capacity is 73,200 and has 60 entry and exit gates.
