Student dies after falling under train in Alexandria

A 16-year-old student died in Alexandria’s al-Raml railway station on Tuesday after falling underneath a train, the Raml police station revealed.

According to Police, the had student accidentally slipped upon trying to get onto the train, which was headed for the Sedi Gaber station. The train was partially suspended for 20 minutes due to the accident, they added.

An ambulance transferred the body to the Kom al-Dekah morgue in Alexandria. Police filed a report on the incident and referred it to public prosecution for investigation.

A Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) report in 2018 recorded 1,793 train accidents in 2017, compared to 1,249 incidents in 2016.

The largest number of train accidents occurred in the Delta region, recording 1,134 incidents, equal to 63.3 percent of the total train accidents in 2017. The lowest number of train accidents occurred in central Egypt recording 221 accidents, equal to 12.3 percent of the total train accidents in 2017.

The highest number of rail accidents was a collision of vehicles with the gates of the railway level crossing, which amounted to 1,435 cases equal to 80 percent of the total railway accidents in 2017, the report said.
